So
what is Visual Development and storyboarding for a movie like and
is there a difference between the two?
Storyboard
Storyboarding, as all of us in the animation industry know is the
visual scripting of a film which precedes actual production. It gives
a sense of the timing, narrative and the pace. It has since long been
used in the creation of live-action films as well. GONE WITH THE
WIND was infact shot frame by frame according to the storyboards
drawn by William Cameron Menzies.
Many of the great directors have used storyboards to great effect
in planning and developing their visions. It is slowly catching on in
India too. Though it is primarily restricted to planning VFX sequences
here.
Visual Development
Visual Development includes the storyboarding but
is much more than that. It starts with the script in exploring all the
visual aspects of the film including the overall scale and canvas of the
story, time and era of the film, mood of the settings, the look of the
characters, right into the tone and drama of each scene. It assists all
departments in the process in seeing and understanding the vision for
the film.
